Repost of an email from Sue Jernigan - Ben Franklin High School Association - Development VP

Hi everyone:

As the year winds down, I want to remind us that we are an important part of the BFHS community.

It is incumbent upon every parent to participate in whatever manner is feasible. The Parents Association has Board vacancies. If you can, agree to serve. If not, then at least come to the meetings. It is one of the ways that we are able to foster discussion, and there is always great information.

Have you wondered why there is no furniture in the library? Come to a meeting! It is not because someone at our school did not do what they were supposed to, and it is not because we like having an empty library. Our administration is doing everything possible to get this fixed. Come find out what is causing the delay, and find out what you can do to help. This is just an example. Great schools exist because of great students, great faculty, and involved parents.

If you learn of a policy or action at school that you don't agree with, or if you want to know more, SPEAK UP! The principal will not know your thoughts unless you voice them. E-mail is a great tool. If we don't communicate then we are part of a problem, and I believe we all want to be part of a solution. For example:if you think that certain courses should be taught, or believe that the elimination of a course should not occur. please let the administration know, and ask why or why not. As talented as they are, the faculty and administration are not mind readers.

We must all be responsive to surveys and requests for comments, and we should try to participate in all of the information forums that are scheduled. If you were able to meet the candidates for principal, make sure you turn in your comment sheets. If you think that a faculty or staff member is exceptionally wonderful, then say so! Our questions matter and our opinions matter. Make better communication happen, and don't stop. This is a problem that needs solving, but, at the very least, make sure your messages are delivered. They care.

My experience with BFHS has been amazing. I have gotten to know remarkable educators, amazing parents, and students that surely are unsurpassed, anywhere. Sometimes it has been frustrating, and sometimes the best laid plans go awry, but, nonetheless, I would do it again, but better. We are all imperfect volunteers,or at least I am, but we have to give what we can and provide energy and feedback to enable our leaders to make it happen.

Finally, I want to communicate my appreciation to all of you who have worked so hard to make BFHS what it is, and who continue to work to ensure its fabulous future. Thank you to all of the staff who go above and beyond, staying late and arriving early and always pitching in, and to all of the parents and grandparents who donate their most precious asset.

I can't believe I'm graduating!

Sue Jernigan
BFHSA - Development Director
